La funzione primaria di una torre era, al di là di tutto, residenziale. L’accesso rialzato, più che a necessità difensive, rispondeva alla consuetudine di garantire un accesso diretto al principale ambiente abitativo (chiamato caminata, in quanto unica stanza riscaldata), raggiungibile da una scala in legno appoggiata alle murature esterne della torre.

All’interno, tramite collegamenti verticali anch’essi lignei, si saliva alle camere private e al terrazzo superiore, e si scendeva negli ambienti di servizio e nei magazzini, collocati tra la caminata stessa e il riempimento di terra che occupava il piede della torre.

The first use of a tower was the residence. The higher door, more than defence needs, serves the purpose to offer a direct entry in the main room, called «caminata», because of the presence of the fireplace. It was reachable by a wooden staircase fastened to the tower walls. Inside the building, using other wooden staircase, it was possible to climb to the private rooms and to the upper platform and to descend to the warehouses, placed between the «caminata» and the ground floor, usually filled with soil.
