Si dicono ferrioli quei mattoni che, a causa della posizione occupata nella fornace, subivano cotture più intense, sino a raggiungere lo stato della vetrificazione. Scarsamente porosi, molto rigidi ma altrettanto fragili, essi non potevano essere utilizzati estensivamente per realizzare muri.

I muratori medievali li distribuivano dunque omogeneamente nelle tessiture murarie, dando talvolta vita a decorazioni a losanghe e a triangoli, singole o multiple.

«Ferrioli» are those bricks which received more intense firing because of their position in the brick-kiln, until reaching the status of vitrification. Poorly porous, very rigid but equally fragile, they could not be used extensively for building walls. The medieval masons then distribute them evenly in the weaving wall, giving rise to sometimes decorated with lozenges and triangles, single or multiple.
